EASTERN Cape u.19 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup champions, Maria Louw High School, from Komani, took part in the tournament’s national finals for the first time last week, at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein.
Maria Louw, finished second in Group A with seven points, managing two wins against Moroka High from the Free State and Ditlalemeso High School from Limpopo, a draw with Okiep High of the Northern Cape and a loss at the hands of eventual group winners, Khula High School from Mpumalanga.
The Komani school managed to score three goals in the group fixtures, conceding two against Khula and Ditlalemeso.
Maria Louw High School deputy principal and coach, Sandile Mata, believed this team should have gone all the way to the knockout stages.
“We have a great squad; they just need to understand their full potential. We displayed great football in that tournament and every one was scared of us, based on our technical discipline.
“We should have beaten Okiep, as we missed our chances, said Mata, adding that they had the majority of the ball possession against Khula, but ended up losing the game.
Mata also said the tournament was very competitive and his team needed proper preparation.
“I experienced bad attendance in the training sessions from the boys and I understand that they did not know their full potential and that was a serious problem.
“After taking part in the tournament last week, they now know what is needed to be done (in order to win next time),” said Mata.
Mata also said if a school wanted to win that tournament it needs to invest in the team.
The Eastern Cape Sports Academy also announced that they had given Maria Louw the status of being a sports focus school, meaning that they provide opportunities for learners to develop athletic skills and pursue careers in sport.
