A Lilitha Nursing College lecturer in Komani died in a horrific
car crash on Saturday, October 14, while travelling to a colleague’s funeral.
Ellen Nomazwe Adams (57) had been travelling with three other
colleagues to Whittlesea, some 37km outside Komani, when the accident happened.
Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson, Mkhululi Ndamase,
said the other three were fellow lecturers and two general workers from the
college.
Adams died at the Life Queenstown Private Hospital.
“Adams demised at a Komani private hospital while the three
other healthcare workers — a lecturer and two general assistants were initially
transferred to hospitals in Komani. The two general assistants have since
been transferred to Frere Hospital and Life St Dominic’s Hospital in East
London, respectively. The lecturer is expected to be taken to theatre on Monday,
October 16,” said Ndamase.
He described Adams as a dedicated civil servant who carried her
work with pride and dignity adding the college had lost a good stalwart.
Health MEC Nomakhosazana Meth sent her condolences to the Adams
family adding the entire health department was reeling in shock.
“We are battling to come to terms with this sad news. She dedicated
her life to serving the people of the Eastern Cape and served them well in all
her 33 years with the department. We send our deepest sympathies to the
Adams family, her colleagues, and friends. May her soul rest in peace,” said Meth.
“We are also wishing the three employees who are still in
hospital, a speedy recovery. We are confident that the team of doctors and
nurses from both the public and private sectors will do everything possible to
save them. We are praying for their speedy recovery.”
Adams’ memorial and funeral services will be announced in due course.
