SINELIZWI Nkabi, a learner at Hexagon High School in Komani, scooped a silver status at the recent President’s Awards for Youth Empowerment (TPA) in Komani.
He is the only learner from a total of 109 learners from across the Eastern Cape to receive this prestigious status. The other learners returned home with bronze.
The award is the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in South Africa and is available to all learners between 14 and 24 years, regardless of their background, culture, physical ability, skills and interests.
The programme provides a framework of non-formal education, as well as experiential learning opportunities to help learners discover their talents. It furthermore brings together practical experiences and life skills: building confidence and resilience, as well as encouraging physical health and recreation and motivating young people to engage with their communities.
The programme kicked off in March, where participating schools – selected on need – were tasked to participate in initiatives that seek to make a difference in their respective communities.
Learners had to visit care centres, assist at various businesses and complete tasks to the benefit of community members.
Some of the activities were tough, like climbing, while other challenges required team work.
Grade 10 Hexagon High School-learner, Nkabi, was the only learner to be awarded silver status for his contribution throughout the duration of the programme.
“Through the award, I have not only learnt how to be an effective leader to others, but also to lead myself,” said Nkabi who found the programme educational and challenging.
“It is all about going the extra mile, gaining new skills, broadening my career prospects and building lifetime friendships – all while having fun.”
According to the Regional Manager of the President’s Awards, Brett Malila, the objective is to groom learners into responsible residents that face challenges, big or small, head on and who will make a real difference in society through positive contributions and involvement.
