SAB Regional League returnees Valgas Football Club of Komani have made history by winning their first ever major trophy, lifting the first Mitsu Challenge Cup at the Dumpy Adams Sports Complex on March 21 after beating Ezibeleni’s Roman Callies FC 3-2 on penalties.
This battle between two teams both from the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, who are under the same stream in the SAB Regional League, proved the highest levels of quality, and the fight and heart shown by both sides was a credit to the development football in the Chris Hani region.
The tournament was sponsored by a local concrete supplier and plant hire Mitsu Ready Mix and Developments in partnership with the South African Football Association in the Chris Hani District where more than 30 teams that were playing in the SAB Regional League took part.
Speaking for the sponsors, Mitsu Ready Mix and Development Lundi M Nyongwana, said it was very important to give back to the community of Chris Hani District as they get a lot of business in the region.
“This was a way of saying thank you to the region and there is no better way than giving back by investing in the development of football through a tournament that brings a smile to every child who plays football. We are happy to partner with SAFA Chris Hani District and we hope to do this again because this tournament was a success,” said Nyongwana.
SAFA Chris Hani President said they are hoping that Mitsu Ready Mix and Development comes back so that they can continue developing football together in the region.
The teams started knocking out each other in their streams for a place in the top 16 of the tournament at Komani’s Dumpy Adams Sports Complex.
The four-day tournament came to an end on March 21 with Valgas walking away with R10 000, gold medals and a big trophy.
All eight teams that booked a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament received playing kits that was branded by Mitsu Ready Mix and Development.
