TZ Boxing Promotions, in partnership with the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture in the Eastern Cape, will host a boxing tournament themed The Revival of the Spirit of Boxing in Komani on February 18, at the Thobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre.
The last time Komani hosted a professional boxing fight was six years ago when Ali Funeka defended his World Boxing Organisation (WBO) welterweight title against Ghanaian boxer Justice Addy at the same venue.
This time around, Eastern Cape Junior Bantamweight champion from Mdantsane, Enathi Stelle, will defend his title against Bagcina Gowa of Braelyn in a 10 round fight on February 18.
The last time Stelle defended his Eastern Cape title was in September last year beating Lelona Siyo by points.
East London-based Boxing promoter who matriculated in Komani, Tando Zonke of TZ Boxing Promotions, said he was very excited to bring the tournament to Komani.
“We are very excited as TZ Boxing Promotions will revive boxing in Komani. Komani is one of those Eastern Cape towns that is passionate about boxing. This town also produced the best boxers in South Africa and I am coming back here to help upcoming boxers and give them hope again,” he said.
During this tournament local boxers will also feature as Xolisa Magusha, Malaki Sobolo and Aphiwe Rasmeni from Whittlesea will be fighting in front of their own families.
TZ Boxing Promotions will also have a Female Flyweight six round fight when Thapelo Bokwe from Somerset East takes on Asanda Simelane of Rustenburg.
TZ Boxing Promotions have defended the move to continue with the event despite the Enoch Mgijima residents strike for poor service delivery.
They said they respected the community struggles by hosting this tournament on February 18, while the strike was held on February 16 and 17.
