A VILLAGE born and bred hip-hop artist is making waves in the industry after he collected the coveted 2021 Standard Bank Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival.
The festival is held in Makanda, formerly Grahamstown, annually.
Sibusiso Molefe, who uses the stage name C tutor J, comes from a village some 42km outside Komani.
The Standard Bank Ovations Awards recognise works and productions from the participants of the festival who stand out. The awards are presented to artists and creatives who are chosen by a panel of judges.
C tutor J won the award for his one-man, one-hour-long presentation that he had curated himself.
“This is a pleasing achievement and also a token of inspiration not only for hip-hop, but for the many youths of Sada and surroundings.
“It is a fuel for them and I’d like to believe that I can encourage them through this to push on and never give up. I am thankful for this award,” C tutor J said.
The show is intended to display the evolution of hip-hop culture from a South African perspective, more so from the perspective of his province of the Eastern Cape.
“The Hip-Hop Experience explores the effects of religion, spirituality, manhood and Ubuntu,” he said, adding that this has been part of his storytelling through music.
He said he was more than just a rapper, as he is also an entrepreneur and philanthropist through his company BANG Entertainment.
C tutor J joined the music industry in the late 1990s and dedicates his latest achievement to hard work.
