THE Imibala gallery in Graaff-Reinet recently received a new addition to its “Life under the Great Karoo Sky” exhibition.

Forgotten Games, a life-size bronze sculpture by renowned South African artist, Louis Chanu, was installed in the alcove between the gallery and De Camdeboo Wijnkamer.

“It was quite a dilemma, setting it in its rightful place,” says Kim Imrie, gallery manager.

“On its arrival, we realised that the base of the sculpture was slightly wider that the doorway it had to fit through!

“Installing such a valuable artwork is a delicate process, since obviously one does not want to damage it!

Luckily, Gustav Grassman of Grassies Staal and four of his staff members came to our rescue!”

The team from Grassies Staal carefully reversed the sculpture at a tilt through the doorway and then gently turned it in a somersault movement in order to have it face the right way.

The sculpture is best appreciated from its street view in the window between the gallery and the Wijnkamer. The “Life under the Great Karoo Sky” exhibition run is being extended with refreshed works from artists Mind Shana, Johanneke Strydom, Piet Roux, Weyers du Toit and others.
