AS the township of Ilinge Main Street crumbles beneath residents’ feet with ever-increasing potholes, young people, helped by the elderly, have taken it upon themselves to fill potholes in some areas with cement donated by community members.
The community dug into their pockets and bought material, while ready-mix company, Mitsu Ready Mix, came in and lent a helping hand to close several dangerous potholes and trenches left unprotected by the government.
A community leader, Asanda Sizani, said the idea came after two accidents, one of which took the life of an elderly woman.
“Well, for us it started with the loss of life due to an accident, and another accident took place after that one, and we realised that one life lost is one too many,” said a passionate Sizani.
“We cannot sit and watch our people perish on the road. We decided to embark on community engagement on how to fix these potholes,” said Sizani.
After leaders of this project walked around knocking on doors and asking for assistance, Komani-based ready-mix company, Mitsu Ready Mix, offered to supply ready-mix cement to close potholes on the main road.
Mitsu Ready Mix’s Kristy Biggs said they were grateful to help as they also want to make Komani and the surrounding areas a better place.
“We need to stand together and make Komani a better place. As one we can achieve big things,” said Biggs.
Other businesses which supported the project include Didi Construction, Server at Your Service, Hotel Trading, TK Maintenance, HLS Building & Civil Construction and Lula Brothers as well as Black and White Medical.
Sizani said, “We must also thank the people of Ilinge for showing most communities and the rest of the world that they are united on their issues. We are adamant and clear that Ilinge is ours.”
