THE sports community of Hofmeyr Sports Club, as well as the wider community of bowlers and tennis players who regularly came to play at Hofmeyr, heard with sadness of the death of 75-year-old Nomlose Elsie Gqoboka.
She was also involved as an assistant for the local branch of the Women’s Agricultural Association, where she delivered excellent service to the community of Hofmeyr.
“Elsie has been the supervisor, cleaner and manager of the kitchen, bathroom and pantry of the Hofmeyr Sports Club since 1972, and although she did not work actively for many years, she regularly walked to the clubhouse when there were sporting events,” the club’s chairperson said.
“For our mother, the sportsmen and women were like her own family. They spoiled her with delicious food and gifts, and we could always have a wonderful time over Christmas, because she spoiled us again with her treats,” her daughter, Thandeka, said.
“Our mother walked from her house to the post office on Friday, September 10, (a distance of) about 3km. There she stood in line for her SASSA payment. Many hours later she collapsed, while still waiting in queue, and the Hofmeyr ambulance were called in to fetch her.
She died later that afternoon.
“She was always very proud of us, her three daughters, Vuyiswa, Zingisa and Thandeka. She also leaves behind four grandchildren,” Thandeka concluded.
