THIS year’s Hike & Hobble for Hospice fund-raising initiative in aid of Graaff-Reinet’s Camdeboo Hospice will be held on Saturday, 9 May.
All interested locals, visitors as well as avid hikers and cyclists from surrounding towns, are invited to participate.
If you are not able to participate yourself, consider sponsoring a participant and, by so doing, help the organisers reach their goal of raising R150 000 for the local hospice.
This annual event, described by the organisers as an epic journey of self-discovery and determination, sees participants attempt a hike or cycle along the farm roads of the Karoo, through some of the country’s most beautiful scenery.
The route starts at the top of Ouberg, outside Graaff-Reinet and follows the gravel road, past Riverdene, all the way to Nieu-Bethesda.
The starting time is 06:00 and, since it’s not a race, everyone is able to walk or cycle at their own pace.
The 2020 Hike & Hobble for Hospice offers the following options:
• The well-known one-day hike (although advertised as 50km, it is, in fact, closer to 47km, and if training starts now, those with past experience are confident that the distance is well within the reach of many).
• The more adventurous at heart, also have the option of completing a 100km-hike/cycle over two days (there and back).
• A two-day hike is also on offer for those who would like to attempt half of the 50km hike on the first day, to complete it on the second day.
• A 21km one-day hike, following the same route, is also an option to consider and only has an entry fee of R500.
All these options – with the exception of the 21km route – has an entry fee of R1 000 in the form of sponsorships for Camdeboo Hospice and includes a T-shirt, boerewors roll, water stops along the route and a beer/cold drink at the end of your journey.
