A SEVERE water shortage continues to plague the town of Middelburg.
According to the Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM), the situation has been caused by drought.
High-lying areas in town are most severely affected and some residences have not had water for days.
CHDM has informed residents via social media that it has been confirmed by specialists that the underground water level has dropped significantly.
The Municipality requested residents and businesses to conserve water by, for instance, not using hosepipes for any purpose and to report municipal leaks to their offices.
The municipality furthermore communicated that the water supply will, for the time being, be cut off daily from 20:00 to 05:00 in an attempt to allow reservoir levels to pick up.
A total of R10 million drought relief was promised to Middelburg in December.
Engela Kruger, chairperson of the Middelburg Business and Ratepayers Forum said, however, “Our enquiries about how the tender money was spent have gone unanswered for months.”
Mid-Karoo Express was informed that pipe connections have still not been completed, and in the meantime the town has yet to experience any relief.
CHDM has, however, undertaken to keep their communities updated on the situation, and requested residents to contact them via 0800 100 100.
