A NON-PROFIT organisation from Whittlesea, Hewu Brotherhood has announced they will be hosting their seventh annual Mgijima Football Tournament in Kamastone Village from April 15-17.
This annual event was not played the last two years due to the coronavirus restrictions.
Hewu Brotherhood was formed by a group of friends and professionals in different fields of work, who originate from various villages in Hewu and share a common purpose, which is to play a pivotal role in improving the lives of the youth and Hewu community at large.
One the members of Hewu Brotherhood, Luvuyo Booi, says, as youth themselves, they noticed the challenges of the community of Whittlesea.
“As part of the youth ourselves, we have noticed over the years alarmingly high occurrences of alcohol and drug abuse, drunken fights/murders, teenage pregnancies etc., by the youth, due to socio-economic realities that they find themselves in.
“This irresponsible behaviour is further accelerated by numerous elements, some of which we felt we could do something about. As lovers of soccer, we identified sports as one of the few positive activities that could keep the youth of Hewu busy. We later included netball, since these issue affect both boys and girls,” concluded Booi.
The teams that will be playing in the tournament will pay a participating fee of R300, which must be paid before the end of the day, today March 31.
The draw will be made in front of the team representatives on April 15, before the tournament kicks off.
The first placed team will win a big trophy, gold medals and cash prize or R3000. The second-place team will walk away with silver medals and cash prize of R1500, while the third-place team will take home bronze medals and R800.
They will be an awards ceremony after the games to honour the player of the tournament, top goal scorer and the goalkeeper of the tournament.
