Police have arrested a 25-year-old man following allegations that he murdered his grandfather on Sizani Street, Mlungisi Township, Komani, on August 29.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Namhla Mdleleni, it is alleged that on August 29, at about 17:00, the community alerted the police about a murder scene on Sizani Street, Komani.

She said that upon arrival, the police found a 90-year-old man sitting in his chair, covered with a blanket, with a stab wound in his throat.

“A case of murder was opened for investigation. A preliminary investigation was conducted, and the grandson was taken in for questioning at Mlungisi SAPS. During the investigation, police discovered that the grandson was responsible for the murder of his grandfather. He was immediately arrested and charged with murder,” said Mdleleni.

She further said he will appear in the Komani Magistrate Court on September 2.

The Chris Hani District Commissioner, Major General Rudolph Adolph, expressed his shock and sadness at such barbaric acts that claimed the life of a defenseless elderly man.

“SAPS will work together with the NPA to ensure a successful prosecution. I call upon the communities to report incidents where elderly citizens are victimised or abused,” he concluded.
