COMMERCIAL pilots using the airport are frustrated with the conditions at the airport.
“Tall grass along the side of the runway is not cut timeously, and the municipality is not doing this necessary work, despite our regular requests,” a local pilot, who requested to remain anonymous, told Mid-Karoo Express. He added, “Acacia thorn trees near the runway also need clearing, and maintenance of the airport building is neglected. This is what greets tourists arriving by air in our wonderful town, and it is downright embarrassing.”
Local tour operator, David McNaughton, expressed his concern after three more incoming aircraft had to be turned away on Monday alone.
McNaughton commented, “Local guest houses would have accommodated these people, but they had to be diverted elsewhere. It is also hunting season, and many overseas hunters would have made use of the airport, spending time in and around Graaff-Reinet, and supporting local businesses who all rely heavily on tourism income.”
