A huge haul of shelled abalone was confiscated approximately 40km outside
Cradock on the road to Port Elizabeth on Tuesday, 18 January.

Members of the Gqeberha Flying Squad arrested a 52-year-old man in
possession of 2 510 shelled units of abalone.

Captain Larianne Jonker, police spokesperson in
Cradock, said it was alleged that during the early hours of the morning, the
Gqeberha Flying Squad received a tip-off about a white Toyota Hilux
construction bakkie transporting abalone
on the road to Cradock.

“The vehicle was stopped and searched 40km
from Cradock and 26 bags of abalone were confiscated. The bags contained 2 150 units of abalone with
an estimated value of R346 000,” Jonker said.

The abalone was handed over to Gqeberha’s
department of agriculture, forestry and fisheries. The vehicle was also impounded for further
investigation.

The suspect will appear in the Cradock Magistrate’s Court on 19 January on charges of possession of abalone.
