TWO retired South African football stars, chosen from eight ambassadors for this year’s MTN8 Cup competition, visited Komani last week Wednesday to showcase the sought-after MTN8 trophy.

The two legends were former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates player, Joseph “Duku-Duku” Makhanya, and former Golden Arrows’ player, Njabulo Manqana, who also played for Orlando Pirates, before moving back to KwaZulu-Natal to play for Amazulu FC.

The other well-known football figures involved this year in the MTN8 Tour are Sibusiso Zuma, Lucky Lekgwathi, Katlego Mphela, Fabian McCarthy, Josta Dladla and Lefa Tsutsulupa.

The aim of the nationwide tour is to promote the tournament, which features the clubs that secured a slot in the top-eight bracket of the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Seven of these clubs are guaranteed R800 000 for participation, while the winner will pocket R8 million.

This year MTN will donate Dream Bags, which consist of football playing kits to schools as part of the MTN8 Legacy Programme, to assist budding soccer players in communities.

In addition, as part of the MTN Goals for Charity initiative (GFC), MTN will pledge R20 000 for each goal scored during the tournament.

MTN is also introducing the Last Legend Standing initiative to further provide much-needed aid to charity. Each legend will be assigned a team to support in this year’s tournament, as well as R40 000s’ worth of Y’ello Dreams.

The stakes are high for the four remaining teams vying to earn the prestigious title of winner of the tournament, dubbed Wafa Wafa.
