Due to a lack of fire fighting vehicles the
Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality in Komani was unable to respond to a fire
which erupted at a municipal building on October 12.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel
Priscilla Naidu, it is alleged that at about 04:00 this morning, police
attended to a complaint of a fire at the JC Marshall building in Komani.

“The building is an old building which is not occupied,”
said Naidu.

“It is suspected that vagrants living in the building may
have started the fire.”

Naidu said no injuries were sustained.

She further said the municipality is yet to open a
case.

According to the DA’s Enoch Mgijima Constituency
Leader, Jane Cowley, the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality was unable to
respond to the fire as they did not have a fire fighting vehicle.

Cowley said this was
the third such fire in recent times.

“The Local Economic Development office and the
Municipal Public Accounts Committee office, with sensitive documentation
pertaining to the functionality of the municipality, also burnt down,” said Cowley.

“I will write to the MEC for COGTA, Xolile
Nqatha, and request a full investigation into why the local municipality is not
equipped to fight fires.”
