WHITTLESEA’S top female football assistant referee, Lerato Nakumbana, breathed a sigh of relief after passing the physical fitness test in Port Elizabeth earlier this month in preparation for the Cosafa U/17 Women’s Championship, hosted by Nelson Mandela Bay.
Nakumbana was over the moon after passing the fitness test.
“I am excited; it was a very tough test. We worked hard preparing for the fitness tests and finally we got it right,” said Nakumbana.
She believes in staying in shape, fit and strong, and avoiding injuries.
The energetic Nakumbana officiated in the two-week Southern African women’s tournament. She officiated in two group games and a semi-final game.
The first game was between Zimbabwe and Comoros, then Tanzania vs Zimbabwe and finally the big one, a semi-final between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
“It was an unusual experience but an amazing opportunity and I literally enjoyed each and every moment throughout the tournament,” said Nakumbana.
“I was a bit nervous in the first few minutes of the first game, but when we came back after half time, I started to enjoy myself right up and until the last game.”
Nakumbana grew up in Dongwe Location, where her love and passion for football started.
The 31-year-old female assistant referee also played football in school before joining the ABSA Women’s League team, Lukhanji Ladies’ Football Club.
“This is not just sport, but my passion. Loving the game makes refereeing second nature to me. It is a lifetime commitment,” said Nakumbana.
