Gun wielding criminals allegedly made off with thousands of Rand after reportedly storming the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality offices on Friday, June 17.
Municipal spokesperson Lonwabo Kowa confirmed the incident, which took place at the budget and treasury offices around 10:00.
He said two staff members and four members of a contracting team working at the offices were held at gunpoint by four armed men.
“No shots were fired and no injuries were sustained. Robbers made off with an unverified amount of money, currently estimated at R70 000. Police were called to the scene. The matter is in the hands of the SAPS now,” Kowa said.
He said the affected people were getting professional help.
Police spokesperson, captain Namhla Mdleleni, had not confirmed the incident at the time of writing.
This is not the first municipality to be robbed in the Chris Hani District Municipal area. Emalahleni Local Municipality was previously robbed on March 22 when tools and a bakkie were stolen. None of these items have been recovered.
