THE Engen Petroleum energy group in South Africa has given extra leverage to the efforts of the humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers (GOTG).

The petroleum giant has committed to fuel the work of GOTG to the tune of R2 million annually for the next three years, thus supporting the organisation in drought relief efforts and disaster interventions.

Engen Petroleum chairperson in Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Syed Zainal Abidin, officially handed over the first of three cheques to Dr Imtiaz Sooliman at the organisation’s offices in Cape Town. The special event was also attended by Engen managing director and CEO, Yusa’ Hassan, and several other members of the Engen senior leadership team.

“Given the challenging social context in South Africa, Engen is firmly committed to investing in sustainable development initiatives that offer tangible value to the communities in which we operate,” said Sri Syed.

According to Hassan, Gift of the Givers’ quick response in the event of disasters, their wide reach, and the fact that the organisation offers humanitarian and unconditional relief, influenced Engen’s investment.

Sooliman said the enormous value of this new partnership could never be underestimated.

“Engen’s donation both of fuel and JoJo tanks has made a great contribution to GOTG’s efforts to intervene in the Eastern Cape. The fuel supports our trucks delivering fodder for animals and the water tankers that do roughly 15 drop-offs per day, seven days a week.

“The JoJo tanks permit us to increase storage capacity at our boreholes and are utilised as delivery points in several communities,” Sooliman explained.
