Cradock police made a lucky break on Thursday when they found an undisclosed amount of money in a vehicle on the N10 between Cradock and Middelburg.

Police spokesperson, Captain Lariane Jonker said the police members were patrolling along the N10 around 11:50 on 14 October when they came across a white Ford Icon parked next to the road in an open field.

“It is alleged that on further investigation one of the four occupants of the vehicle had experienced serious discomfort and the emergency services were contacted to assess the seriousness of the (discomfort). On arrival of the emergency services the police officials then noticed that the suspects were very nervous and did not want to remove their backpacks, even while being medically examined by ambulance personnel,” she said.

After their backpacks were searched, Jonker said, bundles of bank notes were found. Some money was also concealed inside the lining of jackets, the police spokesperson said.

“Three suspects, between the ages of 36 and 41, were arrested and will appear on charges of possession of suspected stolen goods in the Cradock Magistrate’s Court soon,” Jonker said, adding that the investigation was ongoing.
