BAVIAANSKLOOF – The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) advised that the R332 through Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve reopened on Friday, 23 October, for 4×4 vehicles only, subject to weather conditions and final operational confirmation.
The route had been closed following flood damage earlier this year. Repair work improved the condition of the main road, but the river crossings remained challenging.
The concrete causeways had not yet been repaired or replaced, making 4×4 capability essential for travel through the reserve.
Visitors are requested to observe the following precautions:
- Only 4×4 vehicles were permitted to use the through-route.
- Travel in a convoy of at least two vehicles.
- Remain on the main road; do not take detours.
- Follow instructions issued by reserve personnel and the visitor information provided at the gates.
- Check current access and weather conditions before setting out, as the route could close at short notice following rainfall.
Repairs were continuing at the western gate, with the gatehouse operating since Friday.
Information pamphlets were issued to visitors at the gates while permanent signage was being arranged.
ECPTA was working with the Department of Transport and local stakeholders to monitor conditions. If rain or river conditions compromised safe passage, access could be suspended at short notice.
The wider Baviaanskloof region remains an important tourism destination, with accommodation providers and other local tourism businesses continuing to welcome visitors.
Travellers were encouraged to confirm their specific route and access arrangements directly with their accommodation or activity providers before departure.
In a statement, the ECPTA said they appreciated the patience of residents, tourism operators and visitors during the recovery period and would provide further verified information as conditions changed.
