Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane led the provincial government in the launch of the festive season Arrive Alive campaign in Komani, together with Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana they warned members of the public to be cautious in the roads so as to minimize road deaths.
Mabuyane said, “We want our people to be safe and take their safety seriously as this is a difficult time. We know this is the time for families to have fun and to welcome those who work away from their home back home.
“We do these operations with the aim for our people to be safe. We are encouraging people to drive safely as we have roads that have very bad accidents such as the R61, N2 and other roads,” he said.
Mabuyane said police were on the roads ensuring adherence to road safety laws.
“We are pleading with drivers and pedestrians to be careful. We make that plea to work together so that we can start 2022 in a much better way as compared to 2020 and 2021,” Mabuyane said.
Tikana said a lot of work had been done with citizens and drivers alike.
“We will continue working with the law enforcement officers along with road safety teams from the department of transport. We believe what we are launching today, which is a backup of the national launch of road safety, will yield results. Working with all the stakeholders we wish to see reduction of accidents in our roads,” Tikana said.
Mabuyane also warned people of the province to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols and not expose themselves and families to danger. He said government might be forced to take drastic measures for the safety of the people.
“We are encouraging people to follow the non-pharmaceutical interventions. We have seen our numbers going up in our last epidemiological report in the last 24-hours. Our numbers have surged to about 600, we don’t want that, and we would want to contain that spread. Don’t go to unnecessary gatherings, we are really pleading with our people to cooperate and work with us,” Mabuyane said.
