Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM) has called on all households in its jurisdiction, which have illegal electricity connections, to apply for amnesty.
In a statement released on Friday, February 25 the local authority said the amnesty period will only be for a month.
“Customers with tampered or by-passed electricity meters are given an opportunity to normalise their meters without paying a penalty of R8 000 and a reconnection fee of R400. The amnesty period begins on March 1 to 31. After this period any customer found with tampered or by-passed meters will be liable for both the penalty and reconnection fee.”
The municipality said those wanting to apply for amnesty should visit EMLM offices in Komani at 25-26 Owen Street.
“Alternatively, you may visit satellite municipal offices in Whittlesea, Tarkastad, Hofmeyr, Molteno and Sterkstroom,” the local authority said.
