CHRIS Hani-based side, Amavarara FC, were handed their first loss of the season as Spear of the Nation FC claimed a 1-0 win at the Mt Ayliff Stadium in the Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League game on Saturday afternoon.

The Ezibeleni-based side went into the game off the back of a great start to their league campaign, with three wins in their opening three games, which put them top of the league standings.

Thomas Tshabalala’s side, however, visited a Spear of the Nation side who were also full of confidence after their good start to the season. The team had bought Butterworth FC’s league status before the start of the new campaign.

The log leaders looked to start the game on the front foot by trying to control the tempo of the game through their possession.

“We had a great game, especially in the first five minutes, but we did not use our chances. The boys need to learn from those mistakes and take those chances before you get punished.

“We were playing against a confident side in Spear of the Nation. They showed character by not panicking when we were all over them,” said Amavarara assistant coach, Wiseman Mdunana.

It was all Amavarara for the remainder of the second half, but they found it difficult to break down a Spear of the Nation team who were disciplined and stubborn at the back.

Despite the loss, Amavarara are still at the summit of the ABC Motsepe League with nine points, level with Matta Milan and Peace Makers, while Spear of the Nation occupy fifth place with seven points.
