THE Grootfontein College of Agriculture’s first team rugby players won three of their four matches to finish as runners-up of the annual Pannar Agricultural Colleges’ rugby week at Glen Agricultural College, outside Bloemfontein, during the June holiday.
Grootfontein won their first game on Saturday, June 29, 85-0 against Taung Agricultural College from the North West Province.
On Monday they won 50-7 against Fort Cox Agriculture and Forestry Training Institute.
Then on Wednesday, Potchefstroom’s Pampoenboere lost 45-12 against Grootfontein.
The final match was played on Friday between Grootfontein and Elsenburg, where Grootfontein lost 45-10 against Elsenburg.
During the tournament, Reinier van Rooyen contributed 27 of Grootfontein’s points, while Khanyisa Tshuni scored the most tries.
Eight Grootfontein students were selected for the South African Agricultural (SA Agric) team.
They were Henco Nel, Christo Goosen, Adriaan Stander, Janco Scholtz, Ruan Lambrecht, Jean Niemand, Regal Lammont and Tshuni.
One player from Potchefstroom, Llewelyn Ellis, was also selected for the team, while the rest of the players selected were from Elsenburg.
On July 20, Grootfontein will have their next match when they go up against Colesberg at Grootfontein outside Middelburg.
