A BRAND new charity shop in aid of the Middelburg Animal Rescue Family has opened in Du Plessis Street.

Marietjie van Rooyen said opening the shop was a dream come true.

“We have been selling second-hand clothing at the odd market, but it is difficult when one has limited display space. Having a real shop means we can properly display all we have available, and thus generate more income for the animal shelter.”

Van Rooyen runs the animal shelter from the old SPCA premises, but receives no subsidies from the municipality, and heavily relies on the community for donations of dog food, blankets and funds to cover veterinary costs.

“We would like to ask the public to donate absolutely any second-hand clothes, linen, curtains, kitchenware and household items. We also sell books, DVDs, shoes, handbags and accessories.

“We still need more shelves and clothing hangers, as well as clothing rails. But at this point we are just so excited to finally have a real little shop to operate from,” said Van Rooyen.

Donations can be dropped off at the charity shop, and volunteers who are prepared to donate a few hours to assist with sales in the shop can contact Marietjie van Rooyen on 082 455 1297.

The charity shop will also house a large collection of evening, matric farewell and wedding dresses for hire. To view these, contact Lezanne Lombard on 073 302 6223.
