GLEN Agricultural College emerged as the champions when Grootfontein Agricultural Development Institute hosted their annual soccer tournament over the weekend of August 8-11.
For the past two years, the college has hosted an eight-team tournament, with the winners pocketing R6 000 and this year it was adjusted to 16 teams, with prize money of R12 000, which was accompanied by a trophy and gold medals.
The tournament was well attended with approximately 800 people in attendance.
Four provinces were represented in the tournament: the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State.
This was the first time that the soccer team has organised such a big tournament at the college, excluding the annual National Soccer and Netball tournament, which they hosted in 2011.
Glen Agricultural College were the eventual winners of the 2019 Grootfontein Annual Soccer Tournament, with the hosts Grootfontein coming joint third, together with Cedara from the KZN.
Organisers of the tournament, who also served as the coaches of the college teams, Phutiane Letsoalo and Percy Sekwadi, highlighted the importance of sport as part of the lifestyle at the institutions of learning and also as an important component of social life within the communities. They echoed the same views about taking sport to the people of Middelburg and adjacent towns.
“It was really worrying and disappointing to hear from people from Noupoort in the Northern Cape that they didn’t know where this institution was located, I mean we are just about 42km from their town but they don’t know about us.
“Apparently they started to hear of this college through rugby, as the only sport that we have been dominating through the years,” explained coach Sekwadi.
The results of the last day of the tournament were as follows:
Semi-finals results:
Grootfontein 1-2 Citizens
Glen 1-1 Cedara (Glen won 2-1 after extra time)
3rd & 4th Play-offs results:
Grootfontein 0-0 Cedara (prize shared)
Final results:
Glen 3-1 Citizens
