THE upbeat Komani Community Art Centre is attempting to keep learners off the streets, one note at a time.
With the help of dedicated local artists, the institution has established two bands over the past three years – the Art Centre Youth Band and the Marimba Jazz Band, with one goal – to uplift and educate learners.
Veteran drummer, Zola Mtiya, who has worked with Johnny Clegg, says that the institution offers extramural activities not found at most rural schools – all while keeping the 40 learners from different schools in the region, as well as school drop-outs, busy and off the streets.
“Band members are grouped together according to their age, with the oldest member being 13 and the youngest only four years old,” said Mtiya.
The two bands recently had audience members on their feet at a fashion show when they performed Stompi Mavi’s Ulele, using acoustic instruments. Somila Gaji was the lead vocalist.
“When the learners leave the centre, they cannot only perform other artists’ work, but they can also compose their own,” said Mtiya.
“These skills will enable them to pursue music as a career.”
