THE state-of-the-art Komani intermodal taxi rank has eventually been handed over to taxi operators and hawkers for operation after standing idle for almost four years after completion.

The facility, which cost R35 million, was officially launched on Friday by Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, together with Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe.

It is expected to be used by 10 taxi associations and will create business opportunities for hawkers, taxi operators and mechanics.

Spokesperson for Department of Transport in the province, Unathi Bhinqose, said the taxi rank would provide a one-stop shop and a public transport facility to scores of local commuters.

“The rank boasts an emergency vehicle repairs centre for local mechanics, servicing taxis using the rank, so definitely locals will benefit,” said Bhinqose.

Owing to the delayed opening, the structure had become a target for saboteurs and vandals.

Electrical cables, air conditioners, lights, coper pipes and other easy-to-remove items like hosepipes and reels were stripped off the walls. Glass windows of several buildings were also smashed, although there was nothing inside.
