A FIRE in a residence in Hillside, uMasizakhe, has claimed the life of a 52-year-old disabled woman, Maria Links.
The deceased’s husband, Tinie Links, who had been running errands, had returned to the home on Sunday afternoon around 13:00 to find the house engulfed in flames. The woman, who could only walk with the aid of crutches, had been trapped inside the house and was unable to escape the flames.
She was still alive by the time her husband and neighbours managed to retrieve her from the burning building, but succumbed from her wounds shortly after being rushed to the hospital.
Police spokesperson, Captain Bradley Rawlinson, has confirmed that an inquest case has been opened.
Gift of the Givers (GOTG) and Ward Councillor Xolile Galada have joined hands in assisting the deceased’s husband, who is also disabled.
“We have been able to help with food parcels and basic necessities,” said Corene Conradie, local representative of GOTG.
“He is currently residing with family, as the entire house was destroyed. We also plan to assist with rebuilding the house and helping him recover in the aftermath of this traumatic experience.”
