THE Dutch Reformed Church in Aberdeen will be hosting a Christmas song service on Sunday, November 24, and it is hoped that visitors from around the Karoo will join the Aberdeen congregation for this special event.
Well-known author and musician, Annelie Botes, will present a concert with the theme of ‘Peace in a world weary of war’.
The inspiration behind the concert is the heart-warming eye witness accounts of the truce that was declared between the British and German soldiers during World War 1 for Christmas.
The men were able to put aside their hostilities for a day and celebrate Christmas, exchanging small gifts and singing carols to each other.
Botes has asked all who can, to please wear a uniform of some kind.
“Even farm clothes, shawls, nursing uniforms, school cadets, army or navy uniforms if they still fit,” she said.
Botes is best known as a prolific author, but she is also a qualified music teacher and self-taught accomplished organist. Joining her in the performance will be two talented singers, a flautist and the haunting lament of bagpipes.
The music will be a mix of traditional Christmas carols, some military music, and well-known hymns.
The service will start at 10:00, and refreshments will be served in the hall afterwards.
All are welcome. More information is available from Miems on 082 824 6409 or Christelle on 082 299 6123.
