A YOUNG squash player, who only discovered the sport two years ago, is already winning accolades for his performances, after being named Queen’s College Boys’ High School’s most improved senior squash player, during their year-end sports awards last week Friday.
Aviwe Aphiwe Ndzakayi, an 18-year-old Grade 11 learner was born and bred in Ezibeleni Township, just outside Komani and started playing squash in 2017.
“When I came to the school, many teachers said I would make a great rugby player, but my mind was not even there. I fell in love with squash because of its exclusiveness,” said a soft-spoken Ndzakayi.
Ndzakayi impressed during the 2019 sports season, finding a level of consistency encouraging the school to award him.
“I pushed myself hard this year and the award proves that. I was very happy to receive the award on the night and that is what is motivating me to work even harder next year,” he said.
Ndzakayi also said he wants to fight for a top six position next year.
Ndzakayi’s coach, Richard Fietze, praised the player for his work ethic in the sport.
“Aviwe is a very quiet, reserved young man who has a lot of potential in squash.
“Ever since he started playing squash, he has come to training every single day. He is the most committed player I have ever had.
“He trains with me and is always willing to learn and always wants to help other players. I was in no way surprised when he won the award. He is a good example to the rest of the boys,” concluded Fietze.
