WITH the influx of tourists into Graaff-Reinet at this time of year, there is no better time to promote the Jewel of the Karoo. To this end, a very special Christmas market will be held on the evening of December 14 from 17:00 to 20:00.

A process is currently underway to obtain permission to close off Church Street from the Somerset intersection to the ‘Groot Kerk’.

“Using the main street at night, with the church lit up in the background, will be an ideal setting for a Christmas market,” said Nicola Beldon, the market organiser.

“We are encouraging crafters to display their talents and earn some additional income when it is needed most.

“The market is open to crafters from all Karoo towns. Graaff-Reinet is part of the greater Karoo community, and at difficult times like this, we must stand together and support each other,” Beldon said.

The market can accommodate 40 stalls, and more than 20 of these have already been booked, so prospective participants should not delay.

Local musician, Moses Jacobus, will be providing live entertainment, and several other artists from around Graaff-Reinet are lined up to create a festive vibe with music ranging from popular hits to Christmas carols.

There will a large variety of stalls from which to do Christmas shopping, and local restaurants will provide a variety of dinner options. Children can look forward to fun activities and also meet Father Christmas.

“We invite everyone to join us for this special evening, to celebrate our town, our extended Karoo community and Christmas,” Beldon said.

Stalls are still available at R150 each, and can be booked by contacting Nicola at thekaroomarket@gmail.com or on WhatsApp at 083 415 6514.
