THE Chris Hani District Municipality contributed a huge amount to cover Amavarara FC’s expenses for the Nedbank Cup last 16 game against Black Leopards in Thohoyandou on Friday, February 21.
They have also committed to continue giving support to the team and to try to attract local businesses and other government departments to also give support to the Ezibeleni-based side.
Amavarara made history by becoming the first team from the Chris Hani District to qualify for the Nedbank Cup last 32 and, after winning that game beating Super Eagles; the team progressed to the last 16 of the competition, where they have been drawn against Premier Soccer League side Black Leopards.
The Executive Mayor, Councillor Wongama Gela, said the team had gained recognition all over the country.
“The tournament has invited so much attention and speculation to the district, as the team has put us all under spotlight. The team’s commendable and sterling performance on the field promoted them to play among the well-respected teams in the country. They have also gained recognition in the regional, provincial and national arenas for their outstanding performance and we are truly proud of that,” said Gela.
Gela said the Chris Hani District Council had endorsed the decision to support to the team.
“Supporting Amavarara FC has been endorsed by the council due to the critical role that sport plays in our society.
“Youth sport programmes are viewed as an avenue to foster positive youth development and moulds behaviour.
“The Chris Hani District Municipality is indeed proud of the sterling performance of the team which has earned them recognition, respect and support,” said Gela.
In the media briefing, Amavarara were represented by their chairperson, Lusapho Mzwakali and the team’s communications manager, Lunga Gwana.
Amavarara will be playing against Black Leopards in Thohoyandou Stadium tomorrow night at 20:00 and the game will be live on television.
