National Flash Drive Day was held on Tuesday, April 5, to commemorate the day in the year 2000, when the United States issued a patent for the tiny device on which a lot of information can be stored.
The word “flash” is used because of the quick erase action of the device that is similar to that of a camera flash. To join in this celebration, some first year students at Grootfontein Agricultural College outside Middelburg received a specially branded flash drive with the college’s name and logo engraved on it.
As part of their three-year studies at the college, the agricultural students have to submit many assignments. They receive computer training in their first two years at the college and use this knowledge when they have to produce and submit their assignments. Thanks to the small storage friend they received today, they can store and transport lots of information, pictures, music, movies and manuals on the device.
