Golden boy of long distance running from Tsomo, Mcoseleli Luyaba, finished his maiden TotalSport Two Oceans Ultra Marathon on Sunday, although he struggled to reach the finish line, due to cramps.

The Nedbank Running Club’s 40-year-old Luyaba took part in the ultra marathon on Sunday after being crowned the champion of 48th Buffs Marathon crossing the line at 2:25:25.184 in East London in February.

Luyaba finished the Two Oceans in 62nd position, with a time of 03:43:26 and said he struggled with cramps in the 47th kilometre of the 56km race.

“It was my first time and a great experience to take part in the Two Oceans Marathon. I started well, as we planned with the coach, until I got in the challenging Constantia Nek at 47km, where everybody struggles to climb.

“That is where I struggled with cramps but I told myself that I will finish the race, but I will come back next year with a lot of experience and I am happy that I finished the race this year,” said Luyaba.

Luyaba took part in two marathons in March in preparation for the Two Oceans. He was invited by well-known Comrades Marathon icon Nick Bester to take part in the Nedbank Runified Breaking Barriers 50km race, which took place in Gqeberha, where finished second in his age category, before taking part in the 2022 Human Rights Road Race in Ngqeleni, and came in sixth position overall, while winning the veteran’s age category.

Luyaba says he will take a rest and sit down with his coach and discuss the training schedule first, before they start preparing for the Comrades Marathon, as they still have three months to prepare for that race.
