A horrific accident on the R61 road between Beaufort-West and Aberdeen yesterday, 2 July turned out to be more gruesome as initially thought.
Seven people, including three children, died when their Opel Kadett overturned and caught fire.
Initially it was thought that there were five people in the car, but when police and emergency services personnel fought to free the stuck occupants from the car, two more deceased occupants were found in the wreck.
All seven people died on the scene.
Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, police spokesperson, this morning, 3 July said Aberdeen Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
“At about 07:45 police were dispatched to a scene of an accident on route R61 about 20 kilometres outside Aberdeen. At the scene, members found the burning overturned car,” Nkohli said.
He added that it is believed that the vehicle overturned, catching alight, and all seven occupants, including the three children, died at the scene.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown. Police are busy tracing relatives and simultaneously conducting criminal investigations,” Nkohli concluded.
It was initially thought that five people died in the incident.
Fire fighters were on the scene just after 07:00 yesterday morning to put out the fire.
