Voting
for a new mayor and chief whip of the Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality
(DBNLM) resulted in a deadlock at a special council meeting yesterday, 21 July, when
the DA nominated Ewald Loock (DA) as their candidate to be mayor again.
They
nominated the EFF councilor, Tracey Plaatjies as candidate for chief
whip.
The
ANC nominated Willem Safers (ANC) as mayoral candidate and Thembekile Spogter
(ANC) as chief whip.
The
nominations followed an offer by the DA to govern the municipality according to
a power-sharing agreement. The ANC turned down the offer.
Voting
commenced ending up in a deadlock of 12-12 votes.
Due
to no majority vote for a mayor, the Municipal Budget 2022/23 could not be
tabled for adoption. In terms of the MFMA the mayor needs to present a budget.
DBNLM’s
communication manager, Edwardine Abader said another meeting will be convened
for an election of mayor and whip of council, pending possible intervention by
the MEC of COGTA.
