The Makhanda High Court judgment against Komani Protest Action (KPA), prohibiting its leaders and supporters from interfering with the running of local businesses, has not deterred the structure from embarking on a consumer boycott and a total shutdown of Komani from June 8.
Responding to questions from Komani-Karoo Express, KPA leader Axolile Masiza said the consumer boycott will go ahead, with locals aware of the pending costs on them. He said the boycott will be anything from 10 days and more.
“The boycott is as a result of the poor service delivery. Our actions are not against the court judgement. We want to make the (Border Kei Chamber of Business) know that the community they took to court is in charge of their pockets,” Masiza said.
He added: “Next week from June 8 and beyond a total shutdown is going to happen.”

The acts have, however, raised the ire of worker federation Cosatu locally.
Cosatu secretary in the Vusumzi Mjila local branch in Komani, Andisile Pampila, said it was reckless to subject workers to a frivolous consumer boycott that was outside the prescripts of the law.
He said there was a process to be followed with Nedlac to protect jobs.
“When we wage our struggles on matters of mutual interest, workers do sacrifice and embark on protected actions where no work no pay will be applicable. However, on societal issues all mass democratic movements must be consulted,” Pampila said.
