- Chris Hani District Municipality wrote off R21 million indigent debt
- This is the second indigent debt write-off in the three-year indigent registration cycle
- Topping the list with the highest number of indigent beneficiaries and biggest debt are beneficiaries within Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality
Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) council wrote off millions of rands in indigent debt during an ordinary council meeting on October 25 – a second write-off in the three-year indigent registration cycle.
The current cycle is from 2021 to 2024 and is a consolidation of registers from the six local municipalities (LMs) within the district.
The first write-off of R97.6 million was for the period ending on December 31, 2022.
“This proposed write-off amount of approximately R21 599 417.77 will be the second batch within the 2021 to 2024 indigent registration cycle,” council heard.
The following list is that of indigents with current debt. Topping the list with the highest number of indigent beneficiaries and biggest debt are beneficiaries within Enoch Mgijima LM with 3 199 beneficiaries and an account of R6.1 million followed by Inxuba Yethemba LM at R2.2 million with 671 beneficiaries and Sakhisizwe LM’s 403 beneficiaries at R759 000. Emalahleni’s 186 indigent residents owe R108 000, Dr AB Xuma with six indigents owes R12 000 while Intsika Yethu’s five indigents owe R5 800. The debt amounts to R9.2 million.
For indigents with old debt, the money owed totals R12.4 million:
- 1 370 Enoch Mgijima indigents owe R9.4 million;
- 338 Inxuba Yethemba indigents owe R1.8 million;
- 119 Sakhisizwe indigents owe R763 000; and
- 47 Emalahleni indigents owe R360 000.
