The scene is still under investigation by both SAPS and the Fire Department to check the actual cause of the incident,” Ganyaza said.

It is not the first time the town of Komani lost a monumental building following the destruction of the renowned town hall.

“The damage is on the parcel and mail side. No injuries were sustained. Staff assisted to clean up the branch, but the branch is wet, so it is not open,” she said.

The Mlungisi post office will be the only place serving the community currently.

“Next office is Mlungisi, 15km away. The financial side is intact. However, Sassa beneficiaries use a hall for payments so they will not be impacted. On Monday the area manager will be on site for further inspection and safety checks,” she said.

“It is alleged that at about 04:30, police were summoned to the Post Office which was on fire. At this stage no other information is available and the investigation is ongoing,” said Mdleleni.

She said that the estimated damages are worth R500 000.
