ZWELITSHA – Nomonde Beauty Christmas (59) has been denied bail and remanded in custody after appearing in the Nxuba Magistrates’ Court today, 19 December, for fraud charges relating to an alleged funeral insurance scam that involved multiple victims and insurance companies.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, the arrest follows after the suspect allegedly took out funeral policies on the lives of individuals who are not related to her from various insurance companies.

“It is alleged that upon the death of the insured people, the suspect submitted claims and unlawfully received financial benefits,” said Mawisa.

She further said that through a thorough investigation, Christmas was arrested and charged accordingly on 18 December.

She appeared at the Nxuba Magistrates’ Court on 19 December.

Mawisa said that Christmas’s bail was successfully denied and she is remanded in custody to appear again on 24 February 2025.

“SAPS is committed to ensuring that those who are implicated in fraudulent death insurance claims will be arrested and face the full might of the law. This arrest sends a strong message that those who take funeral covers on the lives of individuals who are not related to them will be investigated and brought to book, and police will ensure that justice is served,” said Mawisa.
