On Heritage Day, 24 September, the PCRM will rally at Hexagon/Market Square in Komani and host a special awareness event dedicated to educating communities about breast cancer prevention and the role of nutrition in healthy living.

The gathering will highlight the “Let’s Beat Breast Cancer” campaign, a global initiative by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) and will encourage communities to embrace four life-changing habits: choosing plant-based foods, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Spokesperson Siphiwo Vondo will be in attendance.

Vondo is the founder of R-4 Medical Missions and a Lifestyle Medicine Practitioner.

With 17 years of experience in health education, Vondo has worked on numerous cancer recovery cases since graduating in 2012 and has become a recognised advocate for nutrition and healthy living.

He will be joined by municipal representatives and cancer survivors, who will stand alongside the community to share hope, strength, and support.

The event will take place from 12:00 to 14:00.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, with over 2.2 million new cases diagnosed in 2020, and it remains the leading cause of cancer-related death among women.

South Africa is not immune: over the last two decades, breast cancer incidence has steadily increased, now accounting for 14%–30% of all cancers in South African women.

Disparities in screening, treatment, and survival persist across ethnic and socioeconomic lines, with Black women more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage and to face delays in accessing treatment.

High rates of late-stage diagnosis, between 50% and 57% of cases, further compound survival outcomes.

These concerning trends highlight the urgent need for improved screening, education, and equitable access to treatment.

This Heritage Day event in Komani provides an opportunity to empower communities with practical knowledge, inspire collective action, and promote healthier lifestyles to reduce breast cancer risk and improve outcomes.
