Hitman taken off the street after tip-off from community

A tip-off from a member of the public led to the arrest of a would-be hitman in Bonteheuwel in the early hours of Wednesday 6 May.

According to local ward councillor Angus McKenzie, the narrative that Bonteheuwel belongs in fear, retaliation and endless gang tit-for-tat is being changed in real time.

Threats

“Despite the threats and the tension, residents continue to stand up – quietly, courageously, consistently. The tip-off information that so many of you are sending is not in vain; it is working. The tip-off led police to stop and search a suspected individual. What followed was the arrest of a would-be hitman, a known gangster linked to the Bad Boy gang. He was found in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition,” said McKenzie.

McKenzie said the tip-off saved a life. “Because members of this community chose to act, a family was spared heartbreak. This is what taking back our streets looks like – not noise, not bravado, but ordinary people refusing to be intimidated, refusing to be silent, and refusing to allow criminals to dictate the future of Bonteheuwel.

“We will only win this fight and build a peaceful, safe environment when we stand united – when we draw a firm line, not only against gangsters and their actions, but also against those who shield and protect them. And that line is being drawn stronger every single day.

“To those who are stepping forward, thank you. You are the difference. You are the reason hope is rising. Bonteheuwel is not backing down. We are pushing forward together.”
