“It is not only challenging, but an experience . . .”
“It tested everything, physically and mentally.”
These were just some of the comments from participants of the FNB Wines2Whales 2023 race. This year’s challenge will be no different – except for one small change, the exciting new location for the finish line . . .
Overstrand Municipal Manager Overstrand Dean O’Neill, said as result of ongoing roadworks in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley the race organisers have meticulously crafted an alternative route that retains the essence of the Wines2Whales experience that takes place from 1-10 November.
“This new route culminates in spectacular fashion at Benguela Cove, offering a breathtaking backdrop for riders to celebrate their achievement,” he said.
Overstrand Executive Mayor Dr Annelie Rabie also expressed her enthusiasm about the change. “While unforeseen circumstances necessitated a route adjustment, we’re delighted to welcome Wines2Whales to Benguela Cove,” she said. “This new finish line provides a truly exceptional setting for this iconic event.”
The Wines2Whales has been a cornerstone of the Overstrand sporting calendar for the past 15 years.
“We understand the importance of maintaining a sporting event of this calibre within our region,” the Mayor said. “The economic benefits are undeniable, and Wines2Whales showcases the beauty of Overstrand and its tourism offerings to a national audience.”
The FNB Wines2Whales was born from a desire to create a world-class three-day stage race in the Western Cape, its organisers said in a statement.
“Since its inception in 2009 the three events, aptly named after the wines of the area, have become a must-do event on the mountain bike calendar of riders from the farthest reaches of the country and the world. Its biggest drawcard is undoubtedly the route, which has been perfected over the past decade. Like a fine wine, the race has only improved with time. In 2024 the race goes back to its roots, tackling the original route from Lourensford Wine Estate to the coastal town of Hermanus via Oak Valley Estate. The route is packed with sections that both thrill and torment, with incredible views, new trails, and of course, the old favourites will be back.”
The spirit of the FNB Wines2Whales is “gees”, a truly South African phrase that is only understood once experienced..
