Enzo van der Merwe’s hard work and dedication paid off when he received his Western Province colours in karate earlier this year and was selected to participate in the SA JKA National Championships in Gauteng at the end of July. Competition was tight, as the best of the best in their respective provinces came to show off their skills at the tournament. Eight-year-old Enzo, who has been practising karate since the age of four, proved his mettle and won gold in kata and silver in kumite. This was Enzo’s first time participating in a national championship. His proud father, Charl, was ecstatic about this news and thanked all Enzo’s senseis, especially Sensei Ronnie Knott from the JKA Hermanus dojo. “Well done, my boytjie. We are extremely proud of you.”
Well-deserved!
