Hermanus is riding the crest of a new wave as world-class powerboat and jetski training makes its debut in the coastal town, bringing internationally recognised qualifications right to our local doorstep!

Gone are the days when aspiring superyacht crew and watercraft enthusiasts had to venture far from home to earn their maritime stripes. Thanks to a groundbreaking new academy, the Overstrand has officially entered the big leagues of nautical education – and the response has been nothing short of spectacular.

Neptune Divers and Cruises in Hermanus recently received accreditation from the international Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and it can now offer official training in powerboat and personal watercraft (jetski) through its new chapter, the Neptune Nautical Academy.

The Academy is the first in the Overstrand to offer certified training in RYA Powerboat level 2 and PWC proficiency course. It opened its doors on 24 September with 33 students. Marx Möhr, co-owner of Neptune Divers and Cruises is the chief instructor of the Academy while his wife, Makayla is the principal officer.

“A RYA powerboat Level 2 and the PWC proficiency certificate equip students with far more than just the ability to handle a jet ski or other watercraft,” explains Marx. “You learn how to launch, operate, and recover watercrafts safely, while also building essential navigation, weather awareness and general seamanship skills. In short, an RYA certificate makes you safer, more insurable, more employable and gives you freedom to enjoy the water anywhere in the world.”

Makayla added that the powerboat level 2 (two days) and the PWC proficiency (one day) courses are especially valuable for aspiring or current superyacht crew and other watercraft operators, providing them with a sought-after qualification recognised worldwide.

“Bringing RYA-accredited training to Hermanus is not just a milestone for Neptune, but also a boost for the Overstrand economy. It offers locals and visitors alike access to training that was previously only available further afield,” Marx concluded.
