The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has recorded a continued decline in dam levels across the Western Cape, reinforcing the need for sustained water-conservation efforts from members of the community.

A statement released by DWS on 12 March indicated Western Cape dam levels had recorded a notable decrease from 49,65% to 47,93%, bringing provincial storage levels further below the 50% level.

The Theewaterskloof Dam, which is the largest dam in the Western Cape Supply System, had declined from 50,71% to 49,33%, continuing the downward trend.

The consistent downward movement across key water supply systems highlights the impact of ongoing dry conditions and the importance of responsible water use.

To ensure sustainable supply the importance of responsible water use cannot be emphasised enough, bearing in mind the unpredictable weather patterns.

Residents, businesses and industries were strongly urged to intensify water-saving efforts and to use water sparingly to ensure long-term water security in the province.

The department will continue to closely monitor dam levels and implement necessary measures to ensure sustainable water management.

The Bill of Rights of the of the South African Constitution considers access to “sufficient water” a basic human right. World Water Day, held annually on 22 March since 1993, is a United Nations observance focusing on the importance of water. In South Africa March is National Water Month.

It teaches this precious commodity that should never be taken for granted. Everybody should be conscious of water conservation and there are many ways in which water usage can be reduced. (“Water usage in the spotlight”, Hermanus Times, 26 March 2025.)

Residents of the Theewaterskloof Municipal area were reminded that Level 1 water restrictions were still in place. Details of the restrictions can be found on the TWK website, www.twk.gov.za
