Laughter echoed across Lukhanyo Primary School in Zwelihle as 180 Grade R learners experienced a day of pure joy, thanks to the dedication of two Stellenbosch University Occupational Therapy students who transformed education into entertainment.

Carla Ferreira and Julia de Winnaar organised and hosted an exceptional Fun Day that combined celebration with crucial developmental support for the young learners. The carefully planned event featured six interactive stations, each strategically designed to promote fine and gross motor skills, balance, coordination, teamwork and cooperation, all essential building blocks for Grade R development.

“The day was filled with laughter, joy and unforgettable memories!” they reported, as children explored activities, participated in games, and celebrated together in an atmosphere of pure excitement.

The event’s success relied heavily on community support, with local businesses stepping forward to make the day possible. Gateway Spar, Yorke Cash & Carry, Gateway BUCO, and Hermanus Senior Centre all contributed to creating this positive educational experience.

While celebrating the day’s success organisers highlighted critical ongoing needs at Lukhanyo Primary. The school urgently required funds and expertise to upgrade playground equipment essential for Grade R and Grade 1 gross motor development. Additionally, basic stationery supplies – pencils, erasers and crayons – are desperately needed to support fine motor skill development.
